Staff Accountant (Level 1)
Up to 1 year experience

An individual at this level is expected to:

  • Assist on various portions of audit and accounting engagements
  • Prepare working papers which clearly and accurately document the audit work performed
  • Assist in the preparation of financial statements and footnotes
  • Become familiar with the rules, regulations, code of professional ethics and other pronouncements of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the California Society of Certified Public Accountants
  • Become familiar with the pronouncements of the Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) and the Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB)
  • Progress professionally by working toward passing the Certified Public Accountant’s Examination

Staff Accountant (Level 2)
1 to 2 years experience

An individual at this level is expected to:

  • Assume full responsibility, under supervision, for small engagements
  • Assist on the more difficult portions of large audit and accounting engagements
  • Prepare basic financial statements and footnotes
  • Become familiar with the pronouncements of the Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB), the Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB).
  • Progress professionally by working toward passing the Certified Public Accountant’s Examination

Senior Accountant
2 to 5 years experience

An individual at this level is expected to:

  • Have technical proficiency in areas of the firm’s practice from which the person has developed (Tax, Audit, Accounting, Municipal, Automotive, etc.)
  • Demonstrate the ability to:
    • Apply the numerous tax, audit and accounting principles and techniques in the engagements to which assigned
    • Utilize the firm’s established procedures in an efficient manner
    • Assist with partners and managers in developing solutions and new approaches
    • Utilize the various computer software effectively
    • Strive to become a CPA by working to pass the examination
  • Supervise the various engagements to which assigned by planning, monitoring and reviewing engagements in order to complete them timely and completely. This would include coordinating with the clients, monitoring and assessing staff relations abilities and coordinating and cooperating with other sections of the firm.
  • Show leadership which would include forward thinking, organization skills, setting a good example, representing the firm appropriately and having a take charge attitude
  • Develop clients by participating in firm promotional events and looking for ways to maintain and develop new clientele
  • Possess motivational skills which include the ability to strive to satisfy clients, to complete tasks timely and efficiently, be a take charge person, be a self starter, take on extra responsibilities when needed, give whatever time it takes to get projects done on time and be willing and anxious to take on special projects

Manager
5+ years experience

An individual at this level is expected to:

  • Oversee multiple jobs or projects at once by monitoring seniors’ progress to completion of engagements and keep partners appraised of progress. This includes the managing of clients by developing and monitoring budgets along with scheduling staff, coordinating and cooperating with other sections of the firm to communicate administrative staff-needs, deadlines and responsibilities, staffing needs (consistent with varying busy seasons of the firm) and consistency of procedures and approaches.
  • Be a leader by
    • Looking ahead for upcoming problems (FASB’s, GASB’s, SAS’s, Tax Laws)
    • Selling the firm by being an enthusiastic promoter of firm’s positive attributes
    • Being a backup-capable of stepping in for a partner in his/her absence
    • Planning to address new industry or firm issues
    • Setting a good example to staff and clientele (work habits, punctuality and timely completion of projects)
    • Exhibiting sound discretion (maintaining firm confidences, correcting staff deficiencies and errors)
    • Having a take charge attitude
